A regular car seat boosts the child up to adult height in order to fit the seatbelt. mifold does the exact opposite, instead of lifting the child up, mifold acts as a seatbelt adjuster to hold the seatbelt down.
It does this at three points: belt guides on either side of the child’s hips to hold the lap belt correctly against the bones and off the soft stomach. These belt guides are adjustable to three sizes. There is a third clip on a strap that pulls the seatbelt chest strap down correctly onto the bones of the shoulder, away from the face and neck.
In a collision, mifold holds the seatbelt correctly on a child, as does the car seatbelt on an adult. View video
mifold is a revolutionary new in-car safety solution for 4 to 12-year-olds. There are many journeys where children do not have a child restraint – unexpected journeys, taxi rides, when travelling, in a 2nd car, when a child travels in someone else’s car, when 3 seats don’t fit in a row.
mifold was invented to eliminate the risk of travelling without a car seat when their regular child restraint is simply unavailable. With a compact and portable device, there are no excuses, a child can always be safe no matter whose car they are in. See mifold uses
The car seat belt chest strap must lie on the child’s clavicle (collarbone) and not on the face/neck or over the edge of the shoulder. The shoulder belt positioning strap and Quick Clip is attached to the back of the mifold seat and must go behind the child’s back. The clip is then attached to the seatbelt chest strap to hold it down on the clavicle. The length of the belt positioning strap can be adjusted to the height of the child.
mifold has been designed to be comfortable as well as safe and easy to use. The comfort comes from three design and engineering factors:
- Unique EVA DenseFoam™ (Ethylene-vinyl acetate) to provide constant support at the pressure points. EVA is typically used as a shock absorber in sports shoes and boxing gloves.
- The foam fabric pad extends to the edge of the seat to ensure there is no hard edge
- Designed so the child’s weight sinks mifold into the vehicle cushion, levelling out the two surfaces and minimizing the edge effect
mifold comes in 5 colours: Perfect Pink, Denim Blue, Lime Green, Slate Grey and Pearl Grey
Australian regulatory issues prevent mifold being distributed in this country.
mifold is classified as a Group 2/3 child restraint, designed for children aged 4 to 12, weighing from 15Kg to 36kg or up to 150cm in height - whichever comes first. Please note however, car seat regulations are different in each country; please check when travelling.
mifold is constructed using aircraft grade aluminium 6061 and a super tough plastic polymer called Delrin® 100ST from Dupont™. Each component has been rigorously tested to ensure its longevity even under the most extreme use as a child car seat.
mifold is manufactured in China. Our manufacturing partners are world renowned, ISO approved and operate at the highest level of manufacturing and quality control standards. They already manufacture child restraint products for several other well-known companies.
mifold is designed to work without a latch system. Regular car seats lift the child to be in the position of an adult, mifold does the exact opposite. Instead of lifting the child up, mifold actively holds the seatbelt down, positioning it correctly on the hips and on the shoulder of the child. A latch system does not work with this mode of operation. Furthermore, mifold requires no installation. It is designed for ‘quick-in-quick-out’ usage for every journey in every type of vehicle.
mifold is not designed for adult use and should not be used by adults.
A retractor is a mechanism that winds the seat-belt in and out. It is also what locks the seatbelt during a sudden stop or crash. There are 3 types of retractors, which are defined below:
- Emergency Locking Retractor (ELR) - An ELR allows the free-flowing movement of the seatbelt. It locks up only when the vehicle or passenger moves or stops suddenly. An ELR will not hold a car seat tight in the car by itself, but it will lock in the event of a crash.
- Automatic Locking Retractor (ALR) - An ALR is a type of retractor that remains locked after it is pulled out. As the seat-belt webbing is winding back into the ALR, it locks and prevents the seatbelt from being pulled back out.
- Switchable Retractor - A switchable retractor is designed to be used 2 ways - as an ELR for an adult or as an ALR for a child. This locking feature in the ALR mode is often referred to as a “child restraint locking feature” and is recommended for installing rear-facing or forward-facing car seats with internal harnesses. Most switchable retractors can be turned from ELR to ALR by pulling the seatbelt all the way out of the retractor. As the webbing rewinds, it should lock and prevent the seatbelt from being pulled back out.
The ALR/locked mode is not intended for use when restraining a child using the car seatbelt combined with a booster seat. Child passenger safety researchers advise against using ALR, indicating that locking the seat belt may not allow enough forward motion of the torso to prevent submarining under the lap belt in a crash or deceleration event.
mifold agrees with the use guidelines and recommendations provided by child passenger safety researchers - the vehicle lap and shoulder belt system should be used in the ELR mode and does not recommend switching the retractor into the locking ALR mode.
mifold has revised its recommendations based upon an analysis of vehicle seat belt system testing results. The current Ford Motor Company Inflatable seat belt system (available in Ford and Lincoln vehicles) is approved for use with EU versions of mifold with the following model numbers:
(the model number is located on the sticker attached to the back of the shoulder belt guide)
mifold complies with the booster seat flammability tests required under the UN regulations: UN ECE R44.04. This flame retardancy is achieved only using compounds that comply with the European Community Regulation REACH (EC/1907/2006).
mifold can ONLY be used in vehicles with a three-point static or retractable seatbelt that have been approved and compliant with UN/ECE No.16 or other equivalent standards.
mifold carries an expiry date of 7-years from the date of manufacture as marked on the product.
mifold has a 1 year manufacturer warranty.
The previous version of mifold is not available for purchase in the UK anymore.
mifold is easy to clean by washing the surfaces with a mild solution of soap and water. Do not use bleach.
Yes! mifold is ideal for travelling and the UK version of mifold seat is regulated for use in every country every country in the world except Australia, Canada and the USA.
Australian regulatory issues prevent mifold being used in this country.
If you do use the UK version mifold seat in the USA or Canada, it is suggested that you have your travel documents with you; such as passports, airline tickets, etc. to present to local authorities, to confirm that you are tourists.
Different countries have different child restraint regulations that require minor design, packaging, labelling and instruction manual differences. These differences mean that we cannot advise you to use a mifold seat in a country where it is not regulated as local law enforcement may not recognize your version of the mifold seat.
When used per the manufacturer’s instructions, your UK version of mifold seat will always perform as intended wherever you use it.

mifold is a Group 2/3 “Universal” child restraint system which means that it can be used in most vehicles. It has been approved in accordance with European regulation ECE R44.04. To meet ECE R44.04 approvals, car seats are tested in frontal collisions at 50km/h using crash test P-dummies & advanced measuring instruments designed to assess the levels of protection each seat offers. ECE R44.04 approved seats can all be identified by their orange approval label. Learn more
mifold conforms to the most universally accepted global backless car seat regulations such as ECE R44.04 for the EU, and FMVSS 213 for the USA. These standards are different in each country, and as a result, there are some minor design changes between the versions i.e. product dimensions differ slightly from country to country and the labelling and language vary between territories. Finally, whilst mifold is designed to be used by children 4 to 12 years old, there are also height and weight recommendations that vary according to the country.
As with other manufacturers of child restraint systems, we do not publish our crash test videos.

The “more than 10x smaller” size claim is based on the external dimensions of the mifold, and the volume it occupies. Compared to regular car seats commonly available in the markets, mifold is less than one-tenth of the size, or as we say, “more than 10x smaller.” The “just as safe” claim is based on the mifold’s compliance with car seat safety regulations for child restraint systems.
